Fundamental linear density
RSI assigns the medium a linear density of 8.12 × 10⁻¹⁸ kg/m, which together with its tension sets the speed of light.
Because the Eternal Consonance is a physical medium and not empty geometry, RSI holds that it has a measurable density. The paper gives it as a linear density of 8.12 × 10⁻¹⁸ kilograms per meter. Linear density is mass per unit length, the measure used for strings and threads.
Even in the frictionless Rest-State, this density acts as universal inertia. When a wave of displacement, which is light, passes through the medium, it must work against this density.
The theory holds that the ratio between the 0.73 N tension and this small density fixes the speed of light. This mirrors the way the speed of a wave on a guitar string depends on how taut and how heavy the string is. In RSI, light cannot travel faster because the density of the continuum will not let the tension snap back any faster.
